In 1956, the former entity, Paper Industrial Research Institute of the Ministry of Light Industry, was founded as a public institution in Beijing.

In 2012，CNPPRI was relocated to Sinolight Plaza in Wangjing of Chaoyang District,Beijing.

In 1999, the Institute was renamed as China National Pulp and Paper Research Institute (CNPPRI), converted into tate-owned high-tech enterprise and incorporated into CHINA LIGHT INDUSTRY GROUP CO.,LTD.

In 2017,CNPPRI established its board of directors and was merged into China Poly Group Corporation Limited.
